Crowning achievement

March 21, 2016

I had a great time at Author Night Saturday, Mar. 19, 2016 at the historic Estelle Stair Gallery. It was fun to hang with other authors and chat with readers. I always learn something about how to be a better writer at these events. Plus, the gallery is such a magical place. It’s a dream come true to have my books sharing gallery space with painters and sculptors.

Devorah Fox reads an excerpt from "The Redoubt"I read an excerpt from The Redoubt. If you weren’t able to make Author Night you can hear the same excerpt, this time read by Angela B. Chrysler, herself a popular author.

Now, about that tee-shirt with FOX in huge letters surmounted by a crown. It’s so perfect you would think that I had it custom-made but no. That shirt is about 20 years old, made by Fox BMX Racing. I’m not and never was a motocross racer. The only finish line I ever race for is during National Novel Writing Month marathons. I did however decades ago receive a catalog of Fox gear in the mail. I suspect that a genius in their Marketing department said, “Let’s mail a catalog to everyone with the name Fox. I’ll bet a few of them will buy something just for grins.” And sure enough, my late husband Mike Byrnes bought one of everything. To this day I still have a drawer full of color tee-shirts emblazoned with my name. How cool is that?

Yeah, that was a great marketing idea 🙂 (And I’m sure they didn’t mail that catalogue randomly)

It worked, didn’t it? My eye was my recently caught by a new beer named “King’s Ransom” which is also the title of Book 2 in The Bewildering Adventures of King Bewilliam. Might this be the official beer of the Chalklands’ ruler?

Well, it’s hard to tell 🙂 The thing today with brand names and business names is that it’s hard to find something original. I was trying to name a cafe for a piece of fiction I was writing, and there were businesses with all the names I could think of! Including “Moody Blues Cafe” and things like that.

Yeah, that’s tricky. You don’t want to risk someone coming after you for some perceived wrongdoing that wasn’t your intent at all.
